Speech 3: Sandesh - The message

Many times we wonder after lsitening to a speech:
"What was it all about? "

Many times we dont remeber what the speaker talked about.

Many times we feel that the speaker was not focussed, he or she talks about so many things which is away from the topic.

Remember: A speech should have a message - a Sandesh. Be focussed on the Sandesh.

If you are talking about Child safety, whatever you say, whatever you quote or the the anecdote you narrate  or the event you mention in the speech should be to reinforce the message on child safety.

If you are talking about the need to quit smoking, the speech should contain facts, figures, events, quotes or stories to support your message - Quit smoking

If you talk something else, how can you expect the audience to focus on the subject?

So be specific. Let there be a specific Purpose for your speech. Focus on it

If you have selected the specific purpose of your speech, the next thing to do is to select the general purpose.

It can be to inform, to inspire, to persuade or to entertain

If your Specific purpose is on creating awareness on the need of child safety, the general purpose can be...to Persuade the audience to implement child safety measures at home and in the Car..Dont make an entertaining speech here..

If your Specific purpose is to create awareness on the need to Quit smoking, the General purpose can be to inform the audience on the statistics on the dangers of smoking

If your specific purpose is to raise fund for an orphanage, Inspire the listeners to do it. Inspiring becomes the general purpose

So in summary, the General purpose can be to inform or to inspire or to persuade or to entertain

So, be ready with your speech. Organise your speech with the specific and general purpose in mind.

Check with your mentor or friends and take the feedback

And you must show the generosity to remove unnecessary elements from your speech, the elements which you like, but do not contribute to the message

Good Luck. Hit the target, not somewhere else

The Universal Truth

Ancient Indians worshipped the the Earth as Bhoomatha- Mother Earth. The Son, the Moon, the Nature and whatever they saw was worshipped as Dieties.

Where did they get this idea of considering the elements of Nature as dieties?

Where did they get this  different concept of Considering the nature as not just Matter?

Modern Science is trying it's best to unravel the mysteries of Universe in it's test tubes and laboratories across the world.

Physics and Mathematics and Chemistry..Scientists are sweating day and night to find out the truth

NOW.. SHOCKINGLY.. THEY FOUND OUT...

IT IS NOT PHYSICS.. BUT BIOLOGY IS CLOSER TO TRUTH..

THE UNIVERSE IS SHOCKINGLY BIOLOGICAL IN NATURE...!

Pranams to our ancient sages who saw the truth. It is not even Biology

They proclaimed " I have known the truth beyond the words"

Your Second Speech at YEP : Bhashana Ghatana
Congratulations on completing your first speech.
You were very confident in your first speech for three reasons

1. You talked about a subject which you know very well
2.  No one else knows that subject as much as you know
3. You organised your speech in a chronological order- so it was easy to recollect and present confidently

In your second speech you will be focusing on organizing a speech.

There are mainly three types of organizing the body of the speech

1. Chronologically organised
2. Geographically organised
3. Three supporting points structure

Besides the Body of the speech, there should be an effective speech opening and effective speech closing

Now start writing your speech as described below

1. Write the conclusion of your speech first!

This is what you want to tell the audience finally. This contains your message. So write the end of the speech first!

2. Write down three supporting points to reinforce the concluding message of your speech. ( This is called the classic three structure, most widely used by speakers).

3. Write an effective opening which  leads to the body of the speech and  to the  message you want to convey finally. You can start with a relevant quotation, relevant anecdote or a relevant event or....

Next steps..

1. Whatever is not relevant to the topic, whatever is not needed as far as the topic is concerned, (fat) remove it. No mercy.
2. Rehearse and rewrite your speech
3. Consult with your friends. If they dont like it, chances are that the audience also will not like it.
If they like it, ask for suggestions to improve

Selecting the topic for your speech

Select a topic which you know very well
and the audience wanted to know about it and you are interested to talk about it

Any subject under the sun.. but you should be able to organize it

Finally...

A well organised speech is easy to remember and easy to recollect. Are you able to memorize your speech? Will the audience be able to remember it? Do the opening and conclusion help to reinforce the message you want to convey?
If your answer is Yes, you are ready for your speech 2

Good Luck

Once Again I wish I am a Child
by Syam Hariharan

I was born in a village surrounded by small water canals brushed by the slow moving river Kaithapuzha. Childhood memories are certainly pleasant and often enriches my thoughts and dreams of a lost golden era of life. The rainy monsoons, farmers working on muddy paddy fields, fragrance of freshly harvested rice pellets, the smell of fresh milk, whirl pool of salted lassi with floating fragments of butter, fluttering of birds, the small grunts of cows, feeble sound of milking cows. The village life perfectly matched a typical ‘’Malgudi’’. People used to wake upon siren of Hen, students and working class kept their schedules as per the factory siren which whistled at regular intervals. The entire village set their watches, clocks and memories as per the schedule of the factory siren. I could see the big chimney of the Tyre factory ejecting thick black smoke into the blue sky.

I used to get up early morning, walk around in the big fenced plot, watching my aunts sweeping dry leaves of Mango, jack fruit, cashew and guava trees. They used to pile it up at certain locations and lit them up. During the cold winter mornings I used to warm up my hands in fire and bake some “ Kaawath/ Kaachil**, cashew nuts’’ in that fire. It was so much delicious to have them baked in fire. When the burnt blackish outer skin is broken; fresh aroma slides though the nostrils flooding the taste buds. Around six o clock in the morning people from the neighbouring homes came to fetch water from pond and well. They share village news and have small chit chats. Everyone had a special glow in the face; no one seemed to be under work pressure like the faces which we see in the modern offices.

There were some regular visitors for my grandmother after the busy early morning schedule. Around 9 the fish seller woman, a little plump brownish lady with mouth full of beetle leaf and tobacco. She used to sip a cup of black coffee and take a short rest on our backyard veranda. Weekly once an old chicken vendor used to appear with his white turban and a collection of white, brown and patched chickens with legs tied on his flat bamboo carriage kept over his head. He talked very less and never stopped at our home except when he was thirsty.  During summer season the Cashew trader, came with a big sack of Cashews, we used to sell cashews to him to earn some money for the local Ice-cream sticks. There were many traditional Muslim neighbours; Ummomma belonged to the big bungalow just behind our plot. Ummomma had big golden bangles; she wore stylish clothes, pretty. She chewed betel and tobacco and often smoked small beedi’s. My grandma believed in some magical powers of Ummomma, once when I was sick, tired of severe fever she took me to Ummomma’s bungalow where she chanted some Arabic mantras and gave me some granules of sugar. Grandma said it is to keep away bad energies.   I felt overjoyed when the festival season of the near by temple approached, a “Velichappad** with bronze bells on his sword came through our narrow passage , and a big elephant after him himself struggled to enter into the passage. We used to serve them with heaps of rice, coconuts and bananas and jaggeries. Temple festivals were so much colorful with big smashing fireworks which spread under the starry sky.

Moonlit nights, bathing in the near by pond during summer, flashing lightning and running to the mango tree to collect falling mangoes, furious monsoon rains…………… everything still remain wonderful, and when I look back to life, I feel sorry for the children I will have, what I can give them is an air conditioned space with a small balcony to see the world. They may not believe in what I say about my childhood. I wish the world may go back to the old generations, where we see love and in pain to share the pain.

........................................................................................................... ** Kawath/ Kachil – Is a special tuber similar to Tapioca, a starchy food stuff which is often boiled and mixed with grated coconut and salt or baked in fire.** Velichappad- --Is a person who is believed as the representative of Goddess Kali, he visits homes to collect fund for the temple activities. During those visits he wears special clothes and swings the sword of Kali. Some times he predicts future of people.

The Power of Imagination
by Santhosh Koyyotan

Before marriage I used to imagine about my married life.. it was colorful… After marriage, I realized that imagination is good BUT… with a limit. Now I envy all the bachelors present here… this is your time!!

We cannot fulfill our imagination 100%... but there is a technique… I learned from my 6 year old daughter, once she asked me “ papa can you imagine a number between 4 and 6” I told Yes baby  , then she asked me “is it 5”,  this is only the way we can fulfill 100%

I asked the same question  to my best buddy, Mr. venugopal “Venu, can you imagine a numeric number between 4 and 6”  he said 5.5 , poor man he doesn’t know the difference of numeric and decimal,  even though he is an engineer.

Dear Friends, Guests  and beloved children, a  very good afternoon!

Imagination is the power given by the God.  Without imagination we will not be here, without imagination the world will not be here, our veda says “loka is sankalpa”

Imagination is great knowledge; imagination is a great innovator. If you can imagine it, you can create it.
There is a mantra in Baratheeya culture …“ sivam boothva sivam bajeth “  which means “ you imagine yourself as  Lord Siva, then you will get the spiritual realization  and you will become Siva.

When you imagine yourself as  siva  you will try to behave like Siva, you will try to speak the Truth, You will act boldly, you will act against injustice , slowly  you will get experience in life, this makes self-realization.You can see Buddhists, they are imagining that they are Buddha and they act like Buddha, living like Buddha, and be themselves as Buddha.

Dear friends, I know two persons who were powerhouses of imagination. When I saw first person riding a bicycle which was on a stand. I hope you know the difference between a bus stand and a cycle on stand. Then one nurse came and asked him ‘what are you doing dear?’, he replied ‘I am competing in a cycle race’. It was a mental hospital. The second person was simply sitting on the cycle. I thought he was normal and the nurse asked him the same question she had asked the first person. His replied hastily ‘Move aside, I am moving down the hill, the cycle might hit you’.

Dear friends, I have an advice for you... if you imagine something, it should never ever come to your face, tongue or action. If at all it comes, your dear and near ones will surely send you to the mental hospital.
Once Albert Einstein said imagination is more important than knowledge, he was right. I immediately stopped learning and started imagining!

Unfortunately my friends did not hear Albert Einstein’s theory so they are struggling with their engineering and architect jobs, I am simply sitting.

I suggest you to start doing imagination because, here there is no side effect, it is not much expensive, and it is very simple and easy to do, you will never get pressure, sugar and cholesterol. Have a good health, Have a good day.

Thank you……

Your first Speech: Atma Parchaya

Worrying about finding a topic? Worrying about what to write on the topic?

No Worries! Speak about yourself. Nobody knows this topic better than you!

Write down whatever comes in to your mind. Remember, no self censuring.

Write down important events in your life

Write down funny events in your life

write about hobbies, interests, marriage, children

Organise your speech about yourself in a chronological order. Start writing about your childhood, schooling, college life, professional life..and so on

Write down the message you want to convey to the audience

You are ready. Now, I am sure you have wrote more than 1000 words.

Reduce it to 600 words.

Remove the fat.. Include only relevant and interesting points. This makes your speech interesting to the audience

Rehearse your speech in front of your friend/ mentor

This speech will help you achieve three aims..

  1. Introduce yourself.
  2. Begin to conquer the fear of speaking in front of a group.
  3. Provide a “base line” of your current strengths and weaknesses.
Good Luck..
